Make the exercise teachable
Shorten the wait, move away from the distraction or return to a familiar place. Give your dog a manageable task and a clear reason to repeat it.
Keep it useful at home
An exercise should help with something you actually do. That might be clipping on a leash, resting beside a chair or practising an agreed assistance task.
