Dog training for life in Canada

NAUGHTY DOG / CANADA

A better walk starts at the door.

We work on the moments that make daily life easier: getting out the door, walking past another dog and settling while you take a break. Service-dog preparation starts with a separate conversation about tasks and suitability.

WHAT WE WORK ON

Find the training that fits your day.

Perhaps the leash goes tight at the first squirrel. Perhaps waiting quietly is the hard part. These three training directions give us somewhere to begin the conversation.

AROUND THE HOUSE

Everyday Foundations

Work on the familiar sticking points: a tight leash, jumping at the door or finding it hard to settle. Begin somewhere quiet so you can reward the behaviour you want.

OUT IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Out & About

A skill that works in the kitchen may need more practice outdoors. Work on passing distractions, pausing beside a bench and staying connected when the surroundings change.

DISABILITY-RELATED TASKS

Service-Dog Preparation

Begin by discussing the assistance you need, the tasks involved and your dog’s current behaviour. Suitability is considered individually before agreeing a training plan.

A NOTE ON PRACTICE

Make the next repetition an easier one.

Our school

When the doorbell is too much, begin with a quiet knock. If waiting in a busy spot is too hard, choose a quieter one. Change the exercise so your dog has a chance to get it right, then build from there.

  • Reward the behaviour you want to see again
  • Add one distraction at a time
  • Stop for a break before frustration takes over

THE PRACTICE NOTEBOOK

Three things to try this week.

Field notes

ON YOUR USUAL WALK

Catch the glance back.

Your dog looks up from a smell and checks where you are. That small moment is worth noticing.

BOOTS BY THE DOOR

There’s training in the ordinary stuff.

Waiting while you zip a coat. Standing on a dry mat for a paw wipe. Passing a snow shovel without grabbing it. Choose a small part of your routine and give your dog time to learn it.

Training around Canadian routines

Tell us what happens when the leash comes out.

Or what happens at the door, on a walk or when you stop for a rest. A real example tells us more than a training label. Include your dog’s name and where you live.
